Some thoughts on this colour gentlemen

Seems to come in many shades from indigo to very light grey.

Ron given the variations that show up I'm sure that you're on pretty safe ground if you go with the Slate Grey Sreve suggests.
I'd make it a mid grey, the key thing being to ensure a bluish tinge.
I think your best bet is to look at the range available in acrylics and work with them, the added advantage being the dead flat finish in most of them.

It's used to describe the colour of some French uniforms.
So I'm guessing it's for your Legionnaire.
I'd go with Blue, black and white. Or if you going with Del's advice,
Vallejo do a field blue. It can be a bit of a shiner, so the good old X21 again.

The full name of the colour, gris de fer bleuté, translates I think to blueish iron gray but it's really a dark, dull blue.

Obviously any fabric colour can vary, particularly if based on vegetable dyes. And with wear, washing, exposure to sunlight etc. the colour could change a lot, but if you're going with a darker shade it should still be quite blue, as you go lighter it'll look more grey (as the colour of the base wool begins to assert itself: blue + beige = duller blue).

Well If I wasn't confused before I am now so many variations to choose from.

Got to say I was at a funeral of a French uncle of mine who was a bit of a war hero and there were to French Embassy officials there with the French flag which was draped over the coffin ,when i walked in I thought good God! didn't realise uncle Henri was a celtic supporter the red was orange gold
and the blue was almost green looked more like the Irish tricolour.
The Flag was reserved for these occasions and very old ,so a lesson on fading
colours I suppose.

If it is for a legionaire, I too would suggest Vallejo Field Blue as a starting point.
