This may look like the results of football hooliganism but it's not....it is completely respectful. This is the stone cairn erected at Contalmaison, Somme, in memory of the 16th Royal Scots (McCrae's Battalion or the Sporting Battalion). The battalion included the entire first string of Edinburgh's Heart of Midlothian football team, who joined up at a time when they were leading the premier league in 1914. The team included others from many pro Scottish clubs who took Hearts' example. As expected, many became casualties on July 1, 1916.

The cairn is the most ambitious Somme memorial constructed since the 20's. It resulted from a fundraising drive led by McCrae biographer Jack Alexander, who also designed the sculpted panels. Its a popular place of memory for Scots and football fans of all allegiances. Definitely on my bucket list to get there some July 1.

Oh you are a lovely well meaning bloke Roger, thanks for that.
However, isn't it more usual that the "32mm Hemp double braided coil of rope"
should really be referred to as a line Roger,
whether for heaving or mooring or washing:sneaky:
