The Crimean War memorial in London.

My great Grandfather fought in the Crimea, all I know is that he was wounded and taken to the hospital in Scutari where Florence Nightingale attended the wounded and sick.
He died in 1924 some 70 years after the war, so we can only assume he must have been a young lad at the time of the war.
Upon his death he was visited by another survivor, who contacted the local press. He was given a full military funeral and his coffin was taken on a gun carriage to a North London Cemetery.

A moving story, Malc, I wonder if he was buried at Abney Park cemetery in Stoke Newington? Unfortunately, it suffered severe damage in WW2 from stray bombs, as my own grandfather's grave was obliterated.

Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives ... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours ... You, the mothers who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.

That always gets me, no soldier could ask for a better epitaph from a former enemy.

Mine are my home town war memorial ,I just love the stance it's depicts the weary soldier
The other is The Lincoln Memorial went around the battlefields and went to the memorial it sort of do picks the weight of office and the incredible cost that civil war was to both sides

Hi Guys
Yea its a wonderful sculpt its one that when ever I go home and stop and look at it the sculptor Gilbert Ledward I feel has sculpted one of the finest memorials in the country my granddad on armistice day would stand on the corner with four other soldiers with depressed rifles and heads bowed what a sight that must have been they would stay there for the memorial and one hour after ...respect at its most honourable , that would make a fantastic sculpt to
Cheers Chris

Aye It is one of the mosr expressive faces on a monument.
wereas others are very emotionally designed as a piece with angela etc.

I have a photo of my dad doing the same duty standing
head bowed and reversed arms in Highland dress at our Cenotaph.

Thanks again for sharing and posting
Paul.
