Looking fantastic!!! Really nice... whatever you do, stay happy with him and DO NOT TRY TO STRIP HIM!!!!

Keep plowing through and finish him!

Colin
Hear hear.
He is amazingly well done and almost complete ........Just do what needs to be done Colin, Not the other Colin
Anyway best wishes to the two of you,
Keith

I figured out why I was not happy with my second attempt portrait. I based the first one on some of the more romantic portraits of Lannes and the second on some other sources including etchings, busts and medallion portraits that show him as a bit more if a battle hardened brute. I am guessing the second group is more accurate. Feeling better now that I have figured out how I git them so different...lleasy in retrospect. :)

First effort:

Second version:

Interesting Jacques vs. Jean typo on the first print in the second grouping.

Hi Colin,
I think everything's come out great. Can't help but think the third last picture above looks like he's about to give someone a spray, like someone verbal abuse. Either that or he's tasted some nasty stuff.
Regards
Chris.

Geez Colin! Those last shots look like they could be period works- you've captured the look of Lannes really well. I'm with Herr Semenenko, this version is better by far - much more pugnacious, as I expect the man was.

Cheers,

Brian

That's ten points for agreeing with me and a further ten points for using pugnacious in a sentence:p

Thanks gents. I am growing fonder of Lannes Jr. as the paint goes on him. Taking my time for once and that helps. I got a nice egg shell blue on the coat just by discharging the paint from the tube onto cardboard for 30 minutes or so. French ultramarine, ivory black, and flesh. None of the dreaded wax this time out.

I cracked a new book tonight at work... the opening chapter is a quick run through of the attack on Ratisbon in 1809. Lannes led an initial attack on the defences which crumbled under fire . When the lads were rallied, they didn't relish the idea of going back at the ramparts... Lannes shamed them into attacking by grabbing a ladder on his own and stomping off to assault the fort yelling "I was a Grenadier before a marshal and I still am!!!" The French followed him and carried the town.

This guy truly is pugnacious. Great character!!!!!

Colin

Read the Memoirs of Baron Marbot Colin. He was one of Lannes' ADCs and he describes that assault including the Marshal shaming his staff by grabbing a storming ladder to motivate the troops. Another great character and a great read. What book did you crack?

The book is The Fields of Death by Simon Scarrow. It's the fourth book of the Napoleon and Wellington Quartet by this author. The quartet follows the parallel careers of the two generals until they finally meet at Waterloo. This last book opens with Ratisbon in 1809 and Wellington in Spain that same year and ends in Belgium 1815. Sort of a dramatic historical narrative focusing on Nap and Nosey.
Just started tonight but it seems like a good read.... don't tell my boss, shhhhhhh

Colin

I love the comment "a little more work today" - this is beautiful and coming on leaps and bounds. Simply incredible. He really looks every inch the battle hardened man he was.

As for books I'm a bookworm and enjoyed the Scarrow books and the Memoirs of Marbot are a classic. What I love is how the writers often are unashamed in telling everyone what a great job they did!! Modesty seems to be unknown as they got older.

Just some thoughts.

Cheers
