I started modelling in 1972,and couldn't wait to get my next issue of military modelling,i was looked upon by people I worked beside as not quite right because this was my hobby, still get some funny looks, but its what I do and still enjoy, but I still have my subscription for military modelling and despite it not being as good,i feel there is too many pages devoted to one particular item, I would like to see more effort in getting back to building models, figures and converting figures etc. complete models which only take one or two pages. more photos of model competitions to inspire younger modellers to the hobby. but I am loyal to military modelling and will renew my subscription when due, in the hope that the people who produce the magazine take heed of what is needed.

The 2 origonal Sponsers of Euro were Ray Lamb , and Lynn Sangster of Historex, both retired long ago. Mil Mod has been runing at a loss since the early 90s and the only thing keeping it going, were the profits from Euro, so, I fear that unless it gets another major backer, or a group of backers, it may well go the same way as the Magazine. Once Hinchcliffe stopped backing Northern Militaire, that disappeared quickly too. We need to take a long, hard look at the state of the hobby, and, like most hobbies in the UK, our average ages are all getting older, with not enough youngsters to replace us, mainly because of high prices, for example, nearly everyone I know started out on Airfix kits, when I started a 1/72nd kit was 2 shillings(10p) cheap enough to make mistakes and learn. Much more expensive these days, and that's NOT counting Figures!!! Ray

Can I make a suggestion to all the Resin Figure Manufacturers out there. Could you produce a Cheap range of figures(maybe using a cheaper resin) and aim them paticulary at the kids, or anyone trying to start out in the hobby, so they can try different painting styles and techniques, without it costing an arm and a leg, and potentially turning them off the hobby. Cheap enough to try to chop them up, to do animations, which will lead on to conversions in the future. That's how I started off in this hobby, using Airfix and other figures. How many of you remember the Airfix Trophy, and other classes at the BMSS Nationals, which used to encourage this type of modelling. As a start, why not use a previously OOP figure, and cut down on the packageing costs. Ray

Hi Guys ,

The new editor seems to be more figure orientated as well , I have sent 3 articles to him ...more planned as well

Let's hope it does continue with more figures

Well done Nap. Great News.

I'm hoping Peedee will be putting finger to keyboard soon.;) no pressure.

I've two in the can being prepped for publishing and another two on the go. I think the first is due for publication in Sept/ Oct.
The editor kindly sent me a bust to review and do an article on, can't tell you what it was. Hehe, Its an era that I've not done before so its going to be a challenge.
He really seems to have taken hold of things, it may take a couple of months to get going, so hang in there.

Hi Ray,

Have to comment on your remark about figure prices. Some time ago I looked into this in detail and -long story short- figures have not really become more expensive, relatively. The full story is here: http://www.planetfigure.com/threads/prices-of-figures.71343/page-4

As to your call for cheap resin figures: The quality of current plastic ones have increased tremendously compared to say 30 years ago...they would be perfectly suitable for any newcomer to practice on cheaply. No need for cheap resin figures if you ask me.

And I think there are many youngsters in painting...except that they prefer fantasy over historical. But I am optimistic that there will always be some fraction that will move to historical and keep at least some manufacturers in business. We'll have to wait and see. My grey army is big enough already to last me a lifetime anyway! :)

Cheers,
Adrian

I have again caught up with thread again. Peedee, come on get typing, you have an excellent duo on the go. I have always said, middle finger, I have two more in my pocket. Come on and give it a go, you have a way with words.

Have to agree with Adrian. Many youngsters involved with painting do the Games Workshop stuff which aren't exactly cheap either so I don't even think cost is an issue. Also Golden Demon fantasy competitions which are worldwide, absolutely dwarves the likes of Euro in both entries and footfall. I do feel however that the fantasy stuff is gradually also merging with our hobby - in fact probably about 50 % of my recent purchases have been fantasy stuff.
Maybe Mil Mod should also consider the odd fantasy article.

I truly think, that the days of the generic specialised 'Magazine', has run its course, and will fade away into memory.

Lets face the facts, even the older generation like, Peedee, (Bless him). Can garner more information online than any periodical magazine.

Regards to all.

Mark.

Not sure that I'd totally agree with you there, a number of people I have spoken to have said they much prefer a magazine than viewing an article online.
Its much easier to keep a mag at your side, that a laptop or tablet.

I do a lot on line but I still love the feel of a magazine ......I fact I bought 35 MM issues at the Romsey show !!!!

for younger modellers, I still think airfix are best for practicing painting, also multipose for trying to convert figures, perhapsit would be a good idea for mm or airfix to do a learning class on converting figures,i am sure it would be beneficial to all of us.

I agree that the MM should refocus on encouraging more conversion articles. There should also be more background research on unusual units and uniforms to provide inspiration.

MM could possibly dig up the archives of many figure conversions articles that were done by a number of 'Old Timers'. I'm sure they would have some novelty value, if not a slightly different approach to some techniques.
