the putty is very similar to Magic Sculpt. It's very soft when freshly kneaded and dries rock hard like A+B when cured. I would recommend Tamiya putty if you intend to create flags waving in the wind as they are very strong. They are however too hard (at least for me) for me to achieve the soft effects that I want on such a small scale. I don't like to work with water as it need a longer time for the putty to firm up if you mush it up.
Dave, it's actually quite easy if you invest some time to practice. I hope that this will provide you a good primer to start your own sculpting adventure too!
