I am a bit comfused,we now have a petition for an other referendum and a Labour MP demanding that parliment overturn the vote (there,s democracy for you).I seem to remember after the Scottish referendum the losers were told in no uncertain terms to shut the F up and accept the result.the rules must be diffrent down south:(

Here we go, we have Nichola Sturgeon saying she's going to use the Edinborough talking shop to block the whole o f Great Britain from leaving the EU o_Oo_O:mad:, we have "Lord" Heseltine, the man who spent the whole of his political career getting it WRONG, saying we should now have a renegotiation and then we can get it right in another referendum, we have politicians saying they could vote against the result in parliament, there was even one woman who said she voted leave because she thought they'd lose and now she wanted to change her mind and to top it all there's an online petition by those who lost wanting a second try :mad::mad:.
There was one twee little liberal at the time of the Lisbon treaty who was asked surely he believed that the British should make their own laws in their ow Parliament, he gave a disgusted snort and sneered of course not !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Politicians have long been regarded with such hatred, contempt and disgust that anything they try might very well be the final straw and then............
To change the subject completely, on the 13th of July 1789 the arrogant French elite thought the good times were going to last forever.... the next day they found out they were wrong!!!!!!!!!

Maybe I should point out that English is not my 'mother tongue'. Therefore I might experience some difficulty in understanding the lines above.

It would appear however that the author seems to be frustrated because of current political developments in his country and might even experience emotions that could be described as anger. This seems to be directed towards politicians and members of the more elitist segment of society.

What does seem to be quite clear however is that, according to the author, the fate of these social groups is sealed. For he clearly draws a parallel between the fate of the French aristocracy during the revolution and that of the aforementioned groups in the modern United kingdom. They could find their head in 'the basket' within a short period of time.:nailbiting:

My dear man I have to ask you: do you really propose public execution by Guillotine as a solution for political issues? You can't be serious!

Whatever happened to the spirit of the Scarlet Pimpernel? Did it disappear when Leslie Howard passed away?

Britain has not been ripped apart. We had a referendum, one side won, the other lost. People still went about their normal activities and will continue to do so. Given a few days, calm will return.

The late Tony Benn had it right on power and democracy:
“What power have you got?
Where did you get it from?
In whose interests do you exercise it?
To whom are you accountable?
And how can we get rid of you?”
If you cannot get rid of the people who govern you, you do not live in a democratic system.

And on the EU:
"My view of the EU has always been not that I am hostile to foreigners but I am in favour of democracy. I think they are building an empire and want us to be part of that empire, and I don't want that."

I remain bemused as to why the under 25's are so keen on the EU considering the unemployment rates amongst the young in southern Europe, and if they were so keen on remain, why did so few (36%?) actually vote.

Here we go again........ It's the Scottish Parliament and its talk has resulted in frozen poll taxes, free prescriptions, no-one required to pay the invidious bedroom tax to name but 3 benefits. I'm no SNP supporter but I'm heartily sick of the belittling of Scotlands democratically elected government by people who I thought would not be so condescending.

Not wishing to be rude, but on your own admission English is not you mother tongue and you may have difficulty in understanding what was said, Why comment half cocked ?
I only ask.
Mick

Your not rude. What does 'half cocked' mean?

Paul

Half cocked.
In days of old When firing a musket you had to pull the hammer back as far as it would go ie Fully cocked.
If it was only pulled back half way it was half cocked.

What I was trying to say is , if you don't understand 100% what is being said for what ever reason is it wise to comment on something you may have misunderstood or not fully understood.

Thank you. A habit from my army years?

As for my understanding of the English language. Well.... from what I wrote it should be quite clear that I fully understand what was written. After all I did write a synopsis didn't I?

My opening sentence could perhaps be described as 'sarcastic word play' for lack of a better explanation.

Sarcasm,the lowest form of wit.

Del, I think I have insulted you, if so please accept my apologies. I certainly did not mean to denigrate Scotland, only Nichola Sturgeon for whom I have a passionate loathing. I do not believe she has Scotland's best interests at heart, only Nichola's.
Best wishes, Gary.
