Nap, the slouch hat idea is great, bear in mind they didn't remain pristine for long under campaign conditions but too much deterioration might not be the best look on a bust.

Cheers Simon

The question is did the 6th have the rosette with a badge as in above ref ......the Regimental tie matches the colours of Regimental tie is Red, Yellow & Forrest Green. which matches.

Cheers to Mick for digging ...all thoughts welcome

Kev, I think with the Boer War in particular, what they were supposed to be wearing and what was actually worn, especially after a few months in theatre were two very different things. Kit wore out quickly and resupply was never very reliable so make do and mend and locally sourced items where taken into use. Some of the accounts I have read say that at times there was little difference between the British and Commonwealth forces and the Boers. Interesting but sorry probably not that helpful, though it does give the ability to say the scope of campaign dress is open to interpretation.

H everyone

I've not been painting more on this as..........." YES I have been making a slouch hat "

.......more challenging than I wanted , masses of muttering and even more sanding .....

...but it's getting there .....

....going for the simple band around the crown as in the colourised pictures (particular the buglers)

Will post pics after I've sanded the top of his head more level

FYI ...wanting this fellow to look like he's just had his studio picture taken prior to going on active service

Sounds like a nice idea with the portrait pose and looking forward to seeing the hat.

Cheers Simon

Q the Iffyvision pics .....

IMG_2621.JPG ...1st attempt ....failed ! ....there are another 3 that went in bin! ..was going for the floppy campaign look

Straight off the QM shelf look

IMG_2623.JPG IMG_2624.JPG IMG_2625.JPG

Might decrease the gap between the crown and turned up side ....

Just lodged on the bust ( still to leave head top ......dremel )

IMG_2626.JPG ...also added to the moustache as worn by a reference

Still to add rosette etc on side IMG_2595.JPG

All thoughts welcome

PS...also found this of a Farrier Sgt from the Lancers ...rather like the badge ....MmmmmmmIMG_2597.JPG

Nice hat, really looks the part. What is the putty uou used for this? Like the tash as well, they were pretty much universal issue in those days.

Thank you Simon

Comment from Mick

"For the Sgt their is no right or wrong the Regimental badge can be worn on the chevron as per the Lancer or just above like the Dragoon. with the trade badge above the Regimental badge.

One thing and I am not sure the answer. would a farrier be carrying a carbine on active service as his axe would still be in use for removal of hoof. etc + if axe was carried he would need the axe belt which he does not have..

How about a rough rider with spur similar to a horse shoe. M"

Sounds logical so going to do a Rough Riders badge instead

Cheers Kev, yeah that's what I use as well, I was put onto that stuff by Roy Hunt, then he switched to Sculpey Firm which is even better than Magicsculpt but needs to be baked to harden, too much faffing about, plus I burn things.

Fine scratch work, Kevin!

Cheers Steve ....final bit of scratching ......on the rosette ...3 layers getting smaller then the castle badge

After that's dry ....fit to head and buildup the hair a touch ....then it's add the Rough riders badge ...

....I am trying to talk myself out of removing the castle badge and resculpting it more onto the chevrons ....then putting the new badge ( rough rider )above the cheverons !!!!!

Initially I though ..oh it's only one colour really ...........and then I see rated looking around ......why do I do this to myself ...lol

Stay tuned

Happy benchtime

That is looking great, nice when you can personalise a stock figure like that. Make it unique.
