As they say, trust the process and keep going. It looks like it's progressing well to me.

Brilliant.

It didn’t work.

You know when you hit the limit of your ability? I just did that and so I think I need a new approach for the braid. I think I’m best off tidying the outlining, then using metallics for the braid and cap cord. I can then use oils to bring out the details and clean them up as necessary before highlighting with a lighter metallic. Alternatively I can treat them as though they are pale grey and add some top highlights in white.

It happens to us all, I've seen.people add texture with the paint on here and am completely in awe, but we do what we can do and enjoy it. I've been playing with metallic paint, I gave up on the NMM, I can do it in 28mm but not any bigger.

I try to use the metallic paint as just another colour, mixing normal colours in for mid tones and even more normal paint or straight normal paint for shade. High highlights I will use minimal metallic paint but always kill the shine with matt varnish. Still experimenting but it seems to work OK. For example with silver lace add a t little white for mid tones and dark blues and even black in the shade. It looks better, imo, when matt so the pure metallic highlights need to be kept fairly minimal so they simulate the shine.

Thanks chaps. In a rare moment of sense rather than abandoning the whole thing I went away for a bit, made dinner, watched tv then came back for another play. This time I used a more neutral grey, thinned heavily with a little bit more white in each coat. I think it looks ok on the right but would benefit from some very delicate white highlights. I haven’t touched the rest but I’m certainly happier with this effect.

Hi Stefan

Well done on the rethink , works well on right , as you say I would suggest a little more highlighting

Found this for ref if you need it https://www.planetfigure.com/threads/painting-silver-lace-using-nmm.278977/

Once your happy with the lace I would push the highlights with a hint of scarlet and then adjust the shadows

Have fun

Look forward to more

Happy benchtime

You've done really well with the lacing, big improvement.
Always worth taking a break and returning to it fresh.

As they said, great improvement on the lace, he's really looking good now. As you said 'trust the process' because this is one to be proud of.

Hi Stefan

Now that’s looking really good , I’d be more than happy to have that in this in the display cabinet

Agree ref plume , dark wash then revisit the highs , the yellow just a slight highlight

Is that a sword belt under sash ?

Will you paint out the sides in a black as well ?

Look forward to seeing the final piece in the Completed Forum

Thanks for the updates

Happy benchtime

Thanks Nap, I’ll take a look at the plume tonight. I will be doing the sides and post in black. There is a sword belt, I need to check the sash underneath matches before I’m done.

This is all looking really good and it seems like you have learned a lot on the process.
