Aleks Bodunov’s sculpture of generalissimo Suvorov for Legion Miniatures requires some study before the paints can come into play.

The man we are talking about is of course this one:

The bust on my bench is rather different from the one on the box, a change for the better with a full array of 11 medals and orders! Let's dig into the matter.

E Star of the Order of Saint Vladimir:

Small 'a' can be painted as the ribbon of the George order.

The seven medals between the lapels of our Aleksander Vasilyevitch will be treated in the next part.

cheers,

Pierre

Before we delve into the man's metalwork, one small mistake has to be corrected: the small triangles beneath the Vladimir star (E) have to be added, ref to the picture of the actual star.

Now on to the bling!

That should do it for now!

Any issues popping up or corrections needed will be tackled while painting.

Cheers,

Pierre

Some of Suvorov original medals & breast stars are on display in the "State Memorial Museum Aleksander Suvorov" in Sankt Petersburg, having survived two centuries of turbulent Russian history. They are of the early handmade, embroidered kind, not in the later jewellery versions as on this bust.

The portrait of the man by Sergei Pen shown in my intro, on which this bust seems to based, is in the collection of the "Central Naval Museum, Центральный военно-морской музей", also in St Petersburg.

Biographies in Russian abound, the only one in English as far as I know is "The art of Victory" by Philip Longworth

Now all we need to do is paint!

Great bust with lots or orders and decorations which are going to take some painstaking painting, this is going to.br interesting.

Cheers Simon

A Masterclass in history, decorations and uniforms and very soon a Masterclass in painting.Following with great interest.

Oda.

First oily start on the Suvorov bust:

- the sash of the Order of Apostle Andrey the First Called painted in a mixture of W&N Cerulean Blue and Lefranc & Bourgeois Iridescent White, now completely dry
- waistcoat and jacket blocked in with Mussini Cadmium Green mixed with a touch of Old Holland Sepia, discrete first highlights with L&B Chrome Oxide Green, wet and shiny.

Once thoroughly dry, deeper shadows and more highlights will follow, probably in a week or two.

Now where did I put the man's head?:)

OK, in the meantime on to Talant's samurai horse archer!

Pierre

Nice start Pierre I love how you've done the sash, iridescent white should give it that silk look. I bet people could hear this fella coming from many metres away with all his medals clinking.

Cheers Simon

Hi Pierre

Liking the way the sash is looking so far , very silky

Nice to see this being back on the bench ....and with the Talant Samurai

Thanks for update looking forward to seeing more

Happy benchtime

Pierre, as Oda said, a Master Class.......and it's in my own lounge, many thanks!
The sash colours I shall use on a new figure's clothing [of a different genre] that I am about to start in tandem with another, but it will be the base, top and shading colours that will be used for the metals that I will look forward to most. These will help me in my very steep 'learning curve'.
Regards,
Kim
