Beethoven, adult standing or young version at the piano? I have seen both in edition catalogues recently. Along with a set of philosophers which made me wonder if a 2D representation of the old Monty Python song was possible, sadly it wasn't (n)
Couldn't find 1 Heidegger let alone 2.

WIP not entirely happy with it yet, sort of ground a halt, though I need to get more practice in I think. It seems ages ago but I think its a Jupiter Miniatures flat. Benedikt Widmann, does some amazing stuff…

That version of Beethoven is really nice, have not seen it before. Unique presentation so I assume he is part of a series.

....edit.....
After a bit more thought, that Beethoven is going to be a technically very difficult bust to do. If you use them as the light source the 2 candles are going to throw some really odd shadows and have a huge impact on colour tones.
Bit of a masterclass in OSL on this one.

Good point about the candles Rob… I’m going to have to get cracking on this (if I can get the tops off my oil paints ). Photo is what you might call the equivalent of Beethoven’s box art !

My older unfinished project, if some of you missed the post, I haven t touched since.

Some really nice pieces there, nice to see British and Indian Cavalry subjects, they are few and far between.

That is really dramatic, as Rob says the candles as a light source will be difficult but we'll worth the effort.

Jozef those figures are exquisite. Wonderful lighting effects and very smooth colours. That is what frame display flats should look like.
I hope you get back to doing some more.

Hi guys

Just had to share this by Kirill

This is a comission work that he made couple years ago

90mm flat figure of red lancer`s trumpeter

Painted with acrylics AK 3rd.gen and Kimera

Think it's a Quadri Concept piece

Does anyone display their flats like this? Based like a standard round figure would be done.

standalone

I found a few done like this in the Kulmbach photo gallery I just posted to the clubs/shows forum. Although it is how I did my Sabine set, and will do future vignettes I had not thought about it as an option for singles. Something different from the normal frame display. (Although that woodgrain really should be vertical under the figure)

Loving the Kirill figure, yeah Nap wow NMM is brilliant.

Rob, I always framed my flats for display or just left them free standing but have seen plenty of examples of this method. Of course doing it this way does mean you have to paint both sides, double the painting for the same price or double the hassle?

This is an old one of mine, well they are all old now. If I remember correctly he is King Ludwig, but of where I don't recall, nor the editor for that matter.

Hi Simon

Old Ludwig maybe but looks good , like the gold work on him

Thanks for sharing

More than welcome, will keep popping them on the thread while they are out of the loft and probably bring some down to Bugle Call.

Very nicely done Simon, clever use of the different red tones to separate the figure from the background.
There are so many things to think about when painting a flat properly. It is a real challenge for a painter, you can see why they are so addictive.

Cheers Rob, indeed a lot of considerations to take into account, mostly lighting though as that gives you the shade needed to make it look round. Kind makes you ask why it was made flat in the first place! And yes far too addictive, I keep feel I need to do one but that would be fatal.

Cheers Simon

Yes lighting is key as that is the driver of everything else. As well as the shapes, with your Ludwig you had to impart distance to show the stand is behind him and that his right side and leg are forward of his left, which is back, but not as far back as the stand. So 3 planes to work on, each with its own lights and shade. Probably doing this one with an almost frontal lighting as you did is the best option, Working out where the cast shadows would be if you came at this with a 45 or 60 degree light source would be challenging to say the least, or for a real test add in a vertical aspect, say 60 degrees left and 45 degrees up.

I never studied art but after reading Mike Taylors book on painting flats I started looking at fine art with an eye for "How" rather than just "What", not so much for the technical way the paint was applied but how the impact of the light was rendered.

I am assuming this one is 54mm or 75mm? It is a really nice figure and makes a great flat. But what is the white area by his right foot intended to be? You have painted it as part of the hem of his robe, which is fair. But from the pose I would think that should be behind his right foot going back not infront coming forward. Issue with the engraving not your painting.
And you do need to do some new ones, resistance is futile ;)

Rob, yes a more frontal lighting for this one which is about 90mm or so, pretty large for a flat. I left school at 16 and joined the army so no art studies for me either, lots of trial and error before I started to get happy with the results, also lots of discussion with other flat painters. As you say studying art works is very helpful and informative, I always found Boris Valejo helpful not just the way he sculpts a figure in flat paint but how he uses the colour to do the same. Also look at the work of good illustrators, the kind we use for reference all the time and how they impart solidity in their painting. I will resist because I don't want to have to learn everything I have forgotten about oils all over again, not got enough time left on the planet for that!

Cheers Simon

Hi Rob and Mr Simon

Fascinating to read the replies .......mine are still a nice shiny silver colour ......perhaps this year ! ....but meanwhile one or several busts to deal with

OK so I have another to post for today. This one is of a Russian folk tale about the legendary Firebird, runs along the lines of the love sick Prince trying to win the affections of a young lady (some stories never change much). He has to either capture the bird or at least take a feather, can't remember exactly.

Anyway the flat measures just over 150mm from the base to the tip of the birds wing and is edited and I believe engraved by one Vladimir Nuzdhin of St Peters berg. I have actually met him at Kulmbach many years ago and he is a very nice man with limited English, though that far exceeds my Russian. I do have others of his that will surface in time, if he is still in production he is definitely worth looking up.
