Having only recently reviewed this figure I have been very keen to start it, so here goes.

Very little clean up required and only a slight gap to fill attaching his right arm. I added the waterbottle and bayonet, the latter I am sure I will regret before he is done, I should have left it off to avoid breaking it.

Primed as normal with cellulose gray car primer and a couple of coats of Vallejo Elfic Flesh and he's ready to go.

I have only base coated the face and added some underpainting to contour the face.

I'll leave that to dry for a while as I'm being sent to the shops!

Nigel, Malc & Rob, thank you gentlemen I'm looking forward to this one. Also doing a bit of sculpting on the side so I'll do a painting WIP with a summary of the build once this fellas done, it'll be another to interest Brad. Off to Bugle Call tomorrow so no bench time.

Cheers Simon

They can do but just for a change I'd like to do one without, I guess I chose the wrong period for that. Started sculpting a new one, he won't have whiskers, well maybe not.

Nice start. Skintone choice def matches the figure. Excellent.

Troop54 have some very cool pieces I see.

Planning on much of a base for this dude? Does it come with one? Didn't catch the review! I suppose I can check it out!

David, nah to the goatee, not very Germanic!

Rocco, cheers re the face, I was going a little darker originally until I decided he is from the Gironde as in the Osprey book, South West France, not so Mediterranean.

There is a base, but I'm not going to use it, I will use a small cylindrical column base same as I have on the Chota Sahib figures. Nothing fancy, I reckon mud and puddles that way I will HAVE to weather him, not my favourite job.

Sounds great mate. Mud and puddles is great fun and always looks great. Good choice

I've liked this figure since the first time I saw it online. Nice start. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out for you.

Some small progress over the past few days, the boots and gaiters are pretty much done. I tend to work from the bottom up, not all the time it does depend on the figure after the face has been painted. The last bit to get painted though is usually the headdress, as I brace the figure using the head when it comes to painting awkward undercuts. Also done his scarf/neck warmer and I decided to stray from the original painting by giving him a red collar as per the illustration in the Osprey book (French Army 1870-71 ~ Republican Troops), and a bit of white shirt front.
