Second layer has hardened and mould was removed....

Bit of a setback, because of two things: quite a few air bubbles in the first layer and, more annoying, a rather visible surface between layer one and two. Both things take away the intended effect, so not entirely happy about the result, but I’ll finish it anyway. From some view angles it is rather OK.

Remaining things to do are waves on top and painting the base, making a gradual airbrushed transition from solid base to transparent water.

djeez man, this looking very very nice ,keep it going like you do and don't screw it up like I do somethimes ;)

Oh bu**er. We do live and learn. The air bubbles don't bother me because there would be some under the sea, it's just such a pity about the layer line being visible. The general effect is superb, the whales and the figure look great in the resin. The resin gods are not being kind......:(

Do keep going though. My advice (based on recent experience!) is to practise whatever technique you are going to use for the waves first (unless you have already perfected it). I bought a product that I thought would be great for ripples, watched a load of videos and then went for it. Big problem, should have practised first. My workbench is now covered with practice pieces, and I'm still not happy with the results (but I think I am getting there...).

This is a lovely piece though, a great subject and very nicely composed.

Thanks Nigel. Tough stuff, this resin. And indeed, practice is a key word. Although I have a bit of experience with epoxy resin, I had not realized I had not yet done a multi-layer project that is to be seen from the sides. And I assumed there would be no seam anyway Well, the assumption is the mother of all f....s it turns out again!

We keep going right!? On to the next one.

Cheers
Adrian

It's a shame it didn't quite go to plan, but what a stunning project, and it still looks awesome all the same.

That won’t do it I’m afraid. It’s the whole boundary surface that’s visible. I should have poured the second layer while the first had not fully cured. We live and learn...

Making the water works is an art form in and of itself, sorry to hear you had troubles. You still did a bang up job, Adrian!

Ploughing on....

Just made waves by working the surface with a bur. Very messy job!

The shiny bit on the top right is the unworked surface.
Next step is gloss coating to retrieve transparancy.
And painting the base.

Looks good, gonna be covered in resin dust though. Will a gloss coat bring back some transparency or does it need an element of polishing?

Cheers Simon

It needed a great deal of dusting indeed Simon, but it’s all cleaned up now.

No polishing needed. One or two gloss coats will recover transparency. First one just went on...

Hi Adrian

That’s a great result with the waves and so well thought out during the process , the fins wake works well

Thanks for sharing the updates

Look forward to seeing more

Marvellous conclusion to a thoroughly enjoyable project, the separation line is nothing more than a minor issue. Really one to be proud of.

Cheers Simon

Wow, it looks fantastic! The waves are really good and the overall piece works really well. It's such a pity the layer line is slightly visible but it's much less obvious than I thought it might be. It's really impressive work and such a great subject that you have realised really well.
