Will the colour pale as it dires? Otherwise the whales will be pretty invisible-ish

Getting the right level of transparancy is the scary part. Too dark, and the whales are only vaguely visible. Too light and there’s no sense of depth. And while mixing in the pigment, it is easier to darken than to lighten, so it’s kind of a one-way street.

The resin itself doesn’t pale while drying by the way. Things look dark in the pictures because of a thin first layer I poured to give background when observed from above. From the sides the whales are visible through a thin blue veil. So far it looks ok, but we’ll see when the first layer is solid and the supports are removed.

Cheers
Adrian

First layer hardened ok. A bit of shrinkage and warmping and some minor air bubbles, but mostly ok. Level of transparancy seems all right too.

Supports have been removed.

Next step is repairing and painting the support spots before pouring another 4 or 5 cm layer.

Cheers
Adrian

That's looking pretty good. Happy with the colour?

Thanks Nigel.
Think the colour is OK. Whales are visible and did not lose too much contrast, although one step darker would also have been possible. With this one I think it’s better to err on the safe side. Let’s see how it comes out of the mould next week. :)

Looking forward to the big reveal next week! And I think erring on the safe side is the right approach (something I wish I'd done.....).

Are you going to be doing waves on the surface?

Certainly!
Either by adding ripples with acrylic paste or by burring the surface with the dremel, not sure yet.

Second layer has hardened and mould was removed....

Bit of a setback, because of two things: quite a few air bubbles in the first layer and, more annoying, a rather visible surface between layer one and two. Both things take away the intended effect, so not entirely happy about the result, but I’ll finish it anyway. From some view angles it is rather OK.

Remaining things to do are waves on top and painting the base, making a gradual airbrushed transition from solid base to transparent water.
