The coat is looking good, I assume this isn't the issue great coat he is wearing, it has a nice contrast to the khaki tunic.

Completed Letter to an Unknown Soldier

Hi Simon.
I'm not very knowledgeable on the coat, and I based the colour on the picture below. I hope I was on the right course with this.
The coat I painted is darker then the photo, but I may need to take it down a notch.

I'm far from knowledgeable about WWI stuff, or the stuff I paint for that matter, just that I thought the coat was double breasted, but that might just be officers. Looks good though.

Yes, the famous double breasted Trenchcoat. I should have twigged that myself as I worked for Burburry's when I was in between jobs.
The trenchcoat was for officers and came into use around 1901.
I had the honour to fit the actor Ernest Borgnine with one for a film. Sadly I didn't get to find out which film.

Time to press on with the bust, I've made a start on the rifle and will be basing the colour and grain as best I can on one I have in my collection.
I've also been working on the letter itself, and based it on one sent in 1914 to an unknown soldier.
The paper has been highlighted and shaded before adding the lettering, trying to make it look effective.

Nice going, even at that scale writing the letter can't have been easy, great job.

It was quite a job, although enjoyable. I used a 12/0 brush. great for fine detail.

Almost a Spinal Tap moment if it had been an 11/0 but hey 12 is louder, I mean finer. Didn't realise brushes got that fine, sounds intriguing.

Thanks Nap, just about to go and do a little more to the rifle.
Saying that I've been looking at the pose, as I showed earlier its based on a statue.
I somehow think he'd have trouble holding the rifle like that, I'm not even go to try doing that with mine, It would probably end up on my foot.
But as a piece it works.

While working on the Enfield, I did dry runs regularly to make sure the fit was ok, unfortunately when the time came
to cement it in place, it just wouldn't fit.
In the end I had to drill and peg it to stay in position, and re paint the odd section.
Thankfully the hands went on ok, just hope they don't fall off.
Just got a few bits to finish off and tidy up then he'll be finished.
This is how he looks at the moment.

You wouldn't know the rifle had been a pain it looks great and I really like how you've done the wood. It really is very good in every respect.

Thanks Simon, The rifle was given a basecoat of Orange Leather, then a few highlights were added with Orange, before going over with
thinned Burnt Umber (oils) to give the wood a nice sheen.

Thanks Nap, glad you like the wood effect. I pinned the rifle to the right of the magazine. I made the hole larger than it needed
to be, and filled it with magic-sculpt to allow me to fit it in the correct position.
I have another two projects that I'm beginning to prep, another bust. WW2 from the film Fury, plus TFB's ACW Texan figure.

Never done that bust so will be good to follow , the Texan is a nice figure as well....right up your street
