Hi Brian

I am only using 1 S & T figure and that is being supplied by my mate Carl.

I want more interest with the guys standing and discussing next to the Tank as it's parked up and not on the move.

Thanks
Dave

Re: 1/16 "Tiger In Wait" 506, 4 Kompanie, 1944 Ardennes Offensive

Hi Dave,
Yeah, you may be in a bit of a quandary at this point. If you go with the later cupola, and have the steel wheels, it would be best to go whole hog and make it a late model, and either change the location or find a pic of a late Tiger I in the Ardennes (that should be fun), or just go "what if". If you stick with the Hybrid Tiger with early cupola, you would have to redo some of the stuff you undid, since the hybrids had (I am fairly certain) early tool arrangement, 2 headlights on hull top, etc. as they were really just early builds with steel wheels and new tracks replacing the older rubber rimmed wheels and tracks, not just older turrets on later hulls. The ball mount for the MG would need some work, they had the large opening for the MG, and a smaller one next to it for the monocular sight that the gunner used to aim the thing. Welsh dragon has you covered on that as well if you want to buy one instead of scratch build it, plus they have a nice MG for it as well.

Appears out of stock, but is a nice reference pic none the less
and this one as well, though it doesn't look quite as nice

Hi Jay

Maybe I am making life too difficult for myself here.

The Mid production is the one I want to model but there are so many variables that you end up with a bit of a mish mash and not entirely sure if what I am doing actually served in that arena!!

I think I need to change the location to the Eastern Front where there were quite a few Mid's taking on the T34 but what Kompanie & number would be the best to model given the whole scene??

I'll keep the early wheels and continue with the amendments but need some help with the right tank and right place.

Thanks

Re: 1/16 "Tiger In Wait" 506, 4 Kompanie, 1944 Ardennes Offensive

Hi Dave,
If you go with the mid in a ruined church, I would go western front. I only base this on the feeling that a church with stained glass windows has more of a Normandy 44 feel to it, though I'm guessing there were some in eastern Europe, too. There were plenty of mids on the eastern front as well, its just to me the church fits best in the west, something like a Russian village house working better in an eastern setting. But thats just my opinion. Oh, don't forget Italy, there are a number of photos of mid there as well.
Have you seen these?

or these if you western front?

This might help

I painted my RC mid Tiger like this, except I painted the numbers in green (which might have been correct for that company, not red, as shown on the Bison decal sheet for 1/35th Mid-Tigers in Normandy)

Re: 1/16 "Tiger In Wait" 506, 4 Kompanie, 1944 Ardennes Offensive

Hi Jay

Good stuff as always.

I agree Normandy 44 would be more appropriate but will my figures fit in if I do it as an early winter scene say November??

I do not want to cover it in snow as I want to show all the building and groundwork detail.

The alternative is to simply apply a number that is not particularly known to have served but who knows what, there is very limited info of Tigers at the Ardennes, my history homework proves they were there but not everyone can confirm which type or numbers.

So maybe leave as is, go with the mid, same arena and give it a different number.................?? Otherwise I think I could end up going in circles, the Mid variants had alot of the late Tiger additions apart from the wheels so I am pretty much set, but would once again appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks
Dave

Dave, looks like this is going to be another well researched and interesting thread, already plenty of input and links and even though this isn't my field of expertise I'm really looking forward to following to the end.(y)

Cheers Ken

Re: 1/16 "Tiger In Wait" 506, 4 Kompanie, 1944 Ardennes Offensive

Hi Dave,
Yeah, there wouldn't be any winter clad guys in Normandy in 44, by October-November they were fighting in the Hurtgen Forest in Germany/Belgium and in Aachen in Germany. Most Tiger I's in the west never escaped out of Normandy, with most being knocked out in the bocage fighting or trapped in the Falaise pocket and destroyed or abandoned. There are lots of other figures you could use that would be appropriate for Normandy, and save the winter guys for something else, or (dare I say) ANOTHER Tiger kit??? I will await your decision before pumping you with more info or options!:D

Ok I am all ears on the Normandy 120mm figures..................fire away jay as this could be the safest option

for starters??? I'm certain there are more, these are just a quick search of ones I could think of off the top of my head. I could see the Airborne Miniatures SS guy with binoculars being a look out on the second floor of the church, looking out of the broken stained glass window or something of the sort, with the radioman on the stairs leading up to him. Just a thought.

If you were looking for another S&T type winter figure, I have always thought this one looks interesting. Looks like a kit bash-recast or something, but it is unique.

Another very ambitious project mate but looking at your previous work I am sure you will pull it of superbly, will look forward to seeing what you come up with regarding the figures.

Re: 1/16 "Tiger In Wait" 506, 4 Kompanie, 1944 Ardennes Offensive

Hi Jay

and thanks for the links.

Ok Normandy it is so I'll get Gordy to change the title in due course.

I already have my Tank as per the osprey modelling the tiger 1 , there is a perfect mid production on there. I'll order some of those figures and we are cooking with Gas.

Steve
Thanks for your encouragement matey this is a long term project and I need everything just right.

Re: 1/16 "Tiger In Wait" 506, 4 Kompanie, 1944 Ardennes Offensive

I have some interesting links about cooking with gas... ;)

Ha ha Jay keep them links coming mate your my historical font of all knowledge!!!!

Re: 1/16 "Tiger In Wait" 506, 4 Kompanie, 1944 Ardennes Offensive

Ok headache over!!!!

Exactly the same concept as per original drawing however I have ( for the sake of historical accuracy and via the help of my right hand historian, Jay) settled on the 321 s.SS.Pz.Abt.101 based in Normandy 1944.

I will use the excellent Osprey book as a reference and get the figures in order..............title to be changed and I'll update the links in my first post.

But at least now I can start the highly detailed modifications without thinking it's some sort of mythical scene.

Figures:-

http://www.coloradominiatures.com/AIRM-12036.aspx

If anyone can come up with anymore figures it would be appreciated, I could do with 1 or 2 more!

Now where's Gordy???

Dave, check what you do have for references. I do not believe that the Tigers in Normandy had any Fiefel air cleaners. I am not sure though. But I don't think they did...

Check out the Tiger book by Pat Stansell.... It has everything you need to get started....

Hi Dave,
How about a wounded guy?

http://www.coloradominiatures.com/AIRM-12062.aspx

Airborne had at one time, a wounded Mg-42 gunner sitting on the ground with a bandaged wound on his leg,his leg stretched out in front of him, pointing to his left, but it looks to be OOP.

Yeah nice idea Jay, it also helps with the atmosphere in respect of the time of the war, where the Germans were starting to be in a bit of a mess.

I'll also keep hunting to see what we come up with, some more goodies arrived today:-
