2nd Wisconsin volunteer Infantry

I decided to start a small project now that the sbs figure is heading into the home stretch. Unlike my other 54mm pieces that utilized heads from other manufacturers, this one will have a scratchbuilt head instead of a commercial one.

On July 1, 1863 The 2nd Wisconsin Volunteers of the famed "Iron Brigade" arrived at Gettysburg, Pa after completing a twelve-mile march, and was put into action engaging the Confederates of Archer's Brigade. By the end of the first day of fighting, of the 1,883 men of the Brigade, 1,212 (65%) were casualties, the majority being killed or wounded.

One of my references is a painting by Historial Artist/Historian Don Trioani, entitled "For God's sake forward" showing the 2nd going into action. The painting was taken from Don Troiani's Soldiers in America 1754-1865, by Stackpole Books. In addition to the inspirational painting is accompanying text that contains valuable information pertaining to uniforms, weapons, and equipment.

It's not much to look at but I am still roughing in the legs and have a lot of work to do on the bootees. The Sculpey torso is just there to show the basic pose the figure will be in. The left arm will be almost outstretched and the right arm will be holding his Austrian lorenz rifle at the right shoulder shift position.

Gary, I have actually been thinking of turning this same painting into a dio; so will your figure be a comercial offering or a oneoff?

Gary, I look forward to following your progress on this one. When I visited Gettysburg this past summer, I followed the route of the 2nd as they charged through the woods to Willoughby Run where they captured Archer. Being a Wisconsinite, it was an awesome experience to stand at that spot!

Kreston, I'll be going to Gettysburg this May. It's at the top of my list of favorite historical sites. I normally go there twice each year.

John, Thank you. I'm happy to know that the sbs has been of some help to you. This projects will not be like the 120mm sbs. This will have fewer photos, with a lot less in the way of updates. Why wait to start sculpting? Take the plunge today.~Gary
