Agree there , liking that scar and nice shadows from under the busby

Good start on the busby ...presume you've used a dark black/brown ?

Following with interest

Nap, your assumption is correct on the shadows, pure black at the deepest shadow and moving towards a lighter black tinted with brown.

Loving the flesh tones and neat graduation.
Something I'm yet to perfect.

Malc
Hi Malc,

Thanks for the comment. I’ve been trying to perfect the gradation for years, I’m still trying to perfect it. I haven’t settled on a method yet. I try to experiment with every figure so every figure I paint. I try something a little different, spend a little longer on a portion of the face.

Steve,
Well, whatever you are doing works in my view as well as the contrast.

Back to the painting board for me. :(.

Some progress on the Busby. The examples I’ve seen are typically black fur and that what I’m trying to get at.

Hard to paint with the light because the black just absorbs the light. I’m struggling to keep the highlights from moving to a grayish hue. Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks for looking.

Hi Mike

Not the easiest of colours to paint , for me less is more , you could put the highs in with a black/gray or even a black/brown and the gradually take it back with washes of black

I don't think it's far off looking at the pics

Thanks for updates

Thanks Nap, I stepped away from it last night. I’ll take another stab at it today.

I’m trying to create volume in the paint and trying to create how real fur looks so I have a long way to go yet. It’s an interesting exercise.

What you said about colour grades on the Busby, have you tried grading through dark blues may make it look like shiney well kept fur but it adds more tonal variety. Good work by the way just read through loving the flesh tones.

Cheers Simon

Oh no cracked it up again trying to quote. What you said about colour grades on the Busby, have you tried grading through dark blues may make it look like shiney well kept fur but it adds more tonal variety. Good work by the way just read through loving the flesh tones.

Hi Simon,

I’ve been doing exactly that today as well as adding some greens to the highs to try and get that volume and tonal variety. I’ll try and have some pictures up this evening.

Update: I got some painting in and one lesson learned. The lesson learned is black primer on fur! Make life easier.

I was able to get the cords painted. Actually pretty easy. I was able to get most of the Colback done. I may add some additional highlights later this weekend to see if I can add some pop to it. I’ll finish the gold piping on the colback tomorrow.

Thanks for looking!
