Hi all.

Following on form Joe Hudson's wonderful version of this piece, and the discussion that followed it, I've begun some work on this piece, as it's been sittiing around for ages bugging me that I should it least finish it.

However, I decided there were some things I didn't like about it. His chin has always seemed too narrow and pointy, and he has strange growths coming down his cheeks.

So I started experimenting (as the Roman had some paint drying). Below is where I'm at:
highlander.jpg

Left: the original piece (my casting wasn't as bad as I thought

Centre: bulking out the face and giving him some age - more around chin, more pronounced cheekbones, more of a scowl and bigger bags under his eyes (all with magic sculp)

Right: the question; to beard or not to beard? - quite liking the work I'd done already, I decided to use Plastiline to quickly mock up a beard (homage to the 75mm elite highlander). Quang often uses this stuff, I believe, to mock up figures - a sensible approach! It's been removed now to clean up the MS work I'd done.

So what do you all think? I'm actually quite taken by the beard........

WOW.....................WOW..................WOW....................WOW

Hey Rob.....it looks great with the beard.......fantastic......I even liked the middle pic showing the proccess you used to age him and that looks better than stock. But the beard is a real plusssssss.

Hi Rob,

As a Scotsman myself, I prefer the look of highlanders with a beard. I dont have this bust, but if I did I would go with the beard. I dont know what these tentacle looking objects on the side of the face of the original are meant to represent (sideburns or strands of hair)? I think they spoil an otherwise great face.

Rob, Though you have decided, I too like the beard. The way Latorre sculpted the sideburns is very odd. I can see what he was looking to do, but it came out looking like huge veins or growths emerging from his face.~Gary

Hello Rob,

I know I am a little late but I have to add that I think you have made the right choice using the beard. I think this makes quite a dramatic change and I can't wait to see it finished. :)
