Here is another picture I found taken from the chronicles of Fallschirmjägerregt 3 written by veterans of the regiment. Sorry for the crappy scan (did not want to damage my book) but it shows an interesting mix of footwear worn by soldiers after seeing action in the Newa sector of the Russian front in 1941. I can assure that most of the pictures taken in that sector proove that normal footwear that can be identified is jackboots or marching boots but no jumpboots!:woot:

IMHO historical research is a part of the hobby that might imply the risk of becoming a nitpicker but can be helpful while working on a figure if your goal is to make your project as realistic as possible. If "comments are welcome" in a WIP-thread a comment questioning the correctness of the equipment might not be meant as a major assault - even if the raised correctness-concern turns out to be wrong - but can still be seen as an attempt to support your work. - Just my two cents.

Glad to hear someone with a little common sense chiming in about my comment. As I said in my original post, if Andy used a picture, great. I could probably show a thousand pics with jump boots or ankle boots for every one I have seen wearing marching boots. To be shown otherwise is OK by me, and I appreciate the pics. I did say "more appropriate" if not basing it on an actual pic. Lately I have seen so many sculptors doing work seemingly without any knowledge of or reference on the subject at all (or basing it on of all things, action figure dolls) that I could very well believe that Andy was basing his sculpt on nothing more than a normal Wehrmacht soldiers uniform without much/any reference on the particulars of fallschirmjagers kit. Anyhow...
I would be interested to see a pic of FJ's with the insulated winter pants tucked into their boots, however

As far as nitpickers and rivet counters go, I have seen more than my fair share of figs that could have used more than a little dose of rivet counting to make them better. To each their own, but if all Andy wants is "Gee Andy, another great figure/stunner/excellent figure that looks nothing like your other figures", go right ahead, but thats not honest input. I will refrain from making comments on anyones figures unless it an honest and deserved "attaboy". So I will refrain from commenting further.

I have had the privilege to meet Andy, and have found him to be one of the most enthusiastic and descent guys in the hobby. He is a genuine bloke with a love of what he does, and his research is second to none. He is also one of the few guys who is pretty much doing it all by himself, and as such encourages people like me to 'have a go' at casting and selling my own figures. If anyone deserves an 'attaboy' it is Andy, so help him out and give the praise where it is due.

Long live the nerds, geeks and rivet counters (except the really weird ones).

All the best,
Jon.

Andy, apologies for this, have to say something.

Gellso, I don't know you, your background or anything, but you seriously need to take a long look at how you post sometimes. If you'd just left your reply to Jason at the opening joke that would have been great, disagreement but upbeat tone, no harm done. But then you went and ruined it by putting the boot in *sigh*

Yes I do care if somethings historically accurate or not. The trouble is with you types is you think you're correct all the time without actually having been there!
Jason didn't make a dogmatic pronouncement that they were wrong, he questioned their appropriateness and finished with this which openly stated that they could be right:
Unless of course you are sculpting a particular figure from a photo that is wearing the jack boots.
In your haste to make hay with his comment did you not register this at all, or did you just choose to ignore it so you could have a go at him?

I was a bit like this when I was much much younger..then I got a life. You get caught up in what you think should be with absolutely no deviation or concession whatsoever. You guys are so concrete in your thinking that you compare complete fabricated examples (Bunny Slippers???) with actual possible examples. I wonder where all this negativity comes from. Are you happy within yourself? The world won't end mate. Can you show us your sculpt of a German Para wearing 100 percent accurate boots? If you cant get any life through worrying about a paratrooper wearing hi leg boots I can recommend some good anxiolytics.
You say you're older now, implying wiser, but this is the kind of comment that I'd expect to see from younger men with hotter heads, who don't care/don't notice how in-your-face they're being.

You can't honestly think it's okay to openly insult someone you're having a disagreement with, much less to imply you'd hit them if you met them face to face! If you do it's you that needs to get a life. Bully-boy tactics like this are the kind of thing I'd expect to see on a gaming forum, where the average age is something like 14.

And please stop waving the "you weren't there, you can't know" banner every chance you get. Because you know what? You weren't there either!

I had the decency to start a conversation with you Enion.
It seems there are some pesonal items here that need to be addressed as men and not airing dirty laundry in public.
There was no need for this misrepresentation to be posted and there was no need for you to get involved.

I can only apologise on behalf on Enion that this has spoiled your thread Andy

Hello Andy, I thought I would share these with you, and everyone else, who is interested in the Fallshrimjager quilted padded jacket. The first photo is very interesting that it shows a grey hood with the olive green side of the jacket. Hope that these might help with Andy's upcoming figure(y) Regards, SG

This shows a para wearing jackboots.

Why is this man Gells so nasty and aggressive? He threatens another nice member with violence for simply posting an opinion. I am disgusted, this is modelling after all. What can be so wrong with this poor mans psyche that he feels the need for violence? I see he is from Scotland but surely all scotchmen aren't sexually repressed violent alcoholics? Is it the fumes from the glue he uses that send him crazy as a rabid bat? Is it cold weather and wearing kilt dress that has frostbitten his bits?

Nice idea Andy, really like the padded jacket and can appreciate the patience needed to sculpt it, I didnt realise those squares/diamonds were so small on this type of jacket, you have done a great job so far mate.

All the best
Steve

The quilted jacket looks fantastic Andy, great detailing. This is going to be fun to paint. Best of luck with it's completion. Regards, SG(y)

Hi Andy,
Can I ask a technical type question? Did you use a scribe, scalpel blade or even cocktail stick to do the quilted jacket, or did you use a square former? Because the consistancy is great.
cheers
Richie

Hi Richie,
Between you me and the fence post, the diamond pattern was made by two modelling blades glued together with a 2.5mm spacer in between, which meant the pattern could line up alot easier than just one blade.
hth.

Still takes a lot of skill and a steady hand to get the right angle and depth for the consistency though.
Nice idea.
