Mario, Brad & Malc, many thanks for your comments gentlemen. I have since started on the boots, I prefer to work from the bottom up after the face is done. Still got some work to do on them before I get going on the trousers.

Cheers Simon

Wow what a coincidence, but then it is a really attractive figure just proves we have good taste! I should like to see how you progress too.mate, mine though won't have such an extravagant base, I prefer to keep that all nice and simple, OK lazy modeller but hey I enjoy what I do.

Cheers Simon

I'll put mine up when I get some paint going. But I am slow and have my 75mm 2nd Rhode Island primed and ready to start, have a 54 mm AWI Glover's Marblehead Regt almost done (54's are tough on my eyes these days) and I just primed a 90mm Basel Fawlty "Don't mention the war"

I know what you mean about 54mm, my own builds were 1/35th and getting a bit small so I'm bumping up to 1/32nd which I know is 54mm but more manageable. Not overly keen on anything bigger, but I'm sure that will change as my eyesight deteriorates. Sounds like an interesting bench at the moment, especially Basil F, I reckon there could be a huge range of figures coming out of the Monty Pythons guys, that would be fun.

Quick update on the boots to date, I need to let the black creep into the brown highlights to varying degrees around the pair.

They started with a good coverage of Vallejo Panzer Aces Dark Rust, the darkest shade was sketched in with Citadel Rhinox Hide. There isn't a great deal of tonal difference between these colours so the higher highlights were sketched in with Vallejo Flat Brown. At this stage I start with Scalecolor 75 Black, slowly layering it out from the darkest highlights, at times going back into the creases and glazing some Scalecolor 75 Deep Blue over the black, this I think gives the black a darkening effect and separates it slightly from the black on other parts of the boots.

Onwards with more black till my Granddaughter arrives.

That was quicker than I thought it would be, also I forgot to mention in the last post that the higher highlights were made using Scalecolor 75 Walnut.

The images are quite large compared to the figure but this helps me see areas that may need attention.

As ever if you see something I have missed please let me know.

I just noticed something. You use a cork as a holder. But all this time, looking at your close-ups, I have seen that as a finished base surface, like ground cover. You could probably paint that surface with some dirt tones, and it'll look like you spent days with some Woodland Scenics products to achieve the surface!

Prost!

Not a bad idea, but maybe sawing through the cork to create disks that I can glue on would be better. That way I don't have to buy another pack of Das Pronto and put up with the mess that stuff makes. I do like innovative uses of what I have at hand, with my lot I'll never run out of champagne or prosecco corks. Now all I have to do is remember the idea, not that easy these days!

Oh and a heads up, my next project will be another German Cavalryman of my own design.

Hi Simon

Dashed good start on the base colours , flesh is looking rather good , will you add anymore 5 o’clock shadow ?

The boots have come out really well , good descriptions of what you used as well

Looking forward to seeing more

Your a tease with the next project ...lol

Happy benchtime

Not sure about the 5 o'clock shadow, I want to but I have a tendancy to totally screw it up. I'll be able to get back to the bench this afternoon so we 'll see.

Got to battle the trousers next.

Cheers Simon

Another quick update. Mostly work on the trousers, which were basecoated with Scalecolor 75 Blood Red and then as a slight departure to normal shading for red I used Scalecolor 75 Deep Blue. Only a touch as the blue is a very strong pigment, given that the trousers will be crimson, I though I'd try a slightly different tack. Luckily it seemed to work.

The highlights have been more conventional using Vallejo Amaranth Red and for the higher lights Vallejo Light Orange. So the orange tinge you can see on the legs is orange paint and not my rubbish photography! So now plenty of glazing and washes to bring the tone back closer to the base colour.
