Cracking mate. That's a lovely sculpt. Very nice defined details.
Have at it mate!

What is the holder thing you have there? Where would I get one of those?

Simon, I understand your slight trepidation in undertaking a bust but I'm certain you will rise to the challenge and succeed.
Found a couple of uniform references for the jacket I downloaded, should you need them.
Best of Luck

Looks like a rather lovely bust, I look forward to seeing what you make of him, I'm sure it'll be great!

It is a lovely bust, a 3D print from Scale Collectables, I thought the master copy would be printed and the resin copies cast off but no it is an actual print, my brush can disappear down between his neck and shirt and under the haversack strap.

Hi Rocco, thanks and I did a bit of digging around and found the holder I use at Greenstuff World

https://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/miniature-holders/331-work-holder-on-stand.html

That should have been a hyperlink, maybe it will come up when I post. They a blooming useful bits of kit, I don't use it that often but it's perfect when I do.

Cheers Mel, thanks for the pictures, love these patrol jackets and would own one if I could afford it. In fact I'd probably like the Hussars regt's patrol jackets as well if I could. I'll make do with model figures wearing them instead.

Right then first in progress picture, just starting to build some colour up on the face using Scale 75 (S75) Calamari Orange, S75 African Shadow, Vallejo (V) Elfic Flesh from the Game range. Oh and he's wrapped in tissue to protect the undercoat as I do the face not because it's cold here!

I am cheating by referring to Malcs VBench on this bust last year.

Good start, looking forward to see how this one develops as you tackle this enormous bust (ooh err missus!)

Cheers Nigel, I'm worried just now it seems to be going too easily! I've never handled on this big before, oops now you've got me at it.

Good strong start, a lot of contrast from high to low there.
Are you sticking with acrylics or will you oil glaze the transitions?

Many thanks Rob, I have built up the colour from my palest flesh to a mid tone then blended to bring the contrast down, piccies soon. I leave the oils out as they are translucent anyway, I may as well try and master my chosen medium.

Ta Kev, the thought had crossed my mind but the size thing is a bit daunting so thought I'd best stick to what came in the box.

Excellent start Simon.
The eyes look great, and a good starting point on the flesh.

Malc

Many thanks Malc, the eyes are green like my wife's, the tash will be red like mine, I started with the orange to put some warmth in the underpainting, hope it worked.

OK so I worked on this till Grandads taxi and childminding service was required. I'll go through the steps and try and remember what I did.

With this one I have built up the skin colour with V Sunny Skin Tone, cutting into the shade that I had added V Black Red or Red Black whichever.

20240110_144523~2.jpg

This is where I started to re-establish the high tones and get a bit more saturation in the shades.

More to come but need a new page so as not to confuse myself!

Cheers Simon

I can see where this all leads to: Initially, you were happily scratchbuilding your amazing little men, but now you've fallen under Nap's "busty" spell, and before you know it, you'll be adding oodles of medals onto all your big boys - forever lost to small scales... Wake up, before it's too late!!!

Someone, who means you well

And onwards,

20240110_175446.jpg

Here I have added more colour especially round the eyes and the bags under them, soldiering is tiring work you know. I have built the high tones up a bit and started toning down the darker areas.

20240110_175446~2.jpg

And this is where I left it, I have tried to balance out the different tones using quite a bit of V Brown Sand and V Elfic Flesh Tone.

This is the first bust in probably 20 years if not more so and advice will be gratefully recieved.

Cheers Simon
