Looking good there Simon , as I mentioned before I'd take back the bags under the eyes more

Agree with Robs comment

Looking forward to seeing more on this

Have fun

Cheers Rob that's a good idea re the tash. Got the helmet well underway now but won't dip into the jacket colour till I'm done with it, trying to keep abreast of what I'm doing ad I'm somewhat out of my depth but enjoying it all the same.

Cheers Simon

Very nice work so far like what you have done. Looking at the pictures of the real coat are the cord green or black grey? Regards, Brock

All these jackets had black lace and braid, bear in mind they are now nearly 140 years old, if they were new when discontinued some time in the 1880's. Not that that stopped them being worn, dress regs being nothing more than an amusing novel to officers who paid for their own kit. I'm guessing colourfast dyes weren't in use in those days so a heck of a lot of fading has taken place over time. According to the Fosten brothers there was a tropical version all in white that they illustrated in their 'Thin Red Line' book, I'd love to paint one on a figure but to date I've not seen a contemporary photo or painting. The Fostens are generally very reliable but I have doubts on this one.

Oops missed your comment Kev sorry, yes I have cut back the colour by about 60% and taken Robs advice re the tash. I must have been picturing Stephen Frys character in Blackadder goes Forth or that lesser known general Kitchener when I painted it!

Update to follow.

Cheers Simon

Update imminent.

Spent rather a lot of the day backwards and forwarding on this fellas face today, though I may have to cut the bags under his eyes back even further, Kev?

His tash is now firmly below his nose rather than growing out of it, cheers Rob.

Also spent time on his chin strap and some preliminary work on the collar. Plus I have done the helmet, it does look a little scruffy but that is intentional, on issue the helmets were white, they were dyed on Campaign by what ever was expedient at the time. So with wear they would be rather disreputable in appearance.

Anyway have a look and let me know if I've locked it up.

That's me done for the day, I have some red wine calling me quite seductively, who am I to resist!

Cheers Simon

He's not doing too bad so far, just hoping I don't screw it up now because I'm not sure I want to paint another face that size for a long while.

Cheers Simon

you can't screw it up ,do it in thin layers and you can remove it always, that's the way I do it,I screw up a lot and at the end it looks
yes,how hé :) acceptable ,I work also from dark to light, and that is a bit working, but you do a great job ;)

As mentioned, getting to see pics of finished projects is great but I must admit it’s even better seeing them develop on the painter’s bench

Keep up the great work Simon

Hi Simon

Good updates , again this is MY thoughts , I take the lower lid back to a similar colour with rest of flesh and then highlight the lower eyelid top

I think perhaps the larger pics are making the area more prominent

Looking at closer to Scale pics

Cheers for the encouragement Mario, yes lots of layers and glazing to blend them, I am a bit less organised than you, I go light to dark and dark to light depending where I am on the face. I will be happier painting uniform not skin.

Cheers Mac, glad you are liking this I shall do my very best, well that's what I always try to do anyway. I'm hoping the face is finished now otherwise I will tinker away at it and mess up, always got to know when to step away and I think I'm at that point now.

OK sounds good I can do that, but I will leave the faint blue under the bags on his eyes. Two reasons as I see it, on Campaign he would be tired and secondly there will be shade from the peak of the helmet. But yes I will balance the colour on the lower lid and add a highlight. Many thanks for the advice.

Cheers Simon

Looking at the way your handling this, I think you'll be painting more busts.

Malc

Hi Malc, hmm may be but not for a while, too many other projects lining up, it has been a great learning curve so far on the face so hopefully the lessons will stick when I revert back to my normal scale. I am enjoying it but not as much as I do a full figure, there is one other bust I like the look of from TFB so maybe later in the year I'll have another go.

Cheers Simon

His face is looking good Simon, I agree with your thought to stop there until you have the other sections done, you will have to adjust for the shade of the helmet brim and potentially when you see the skintone against the black tunic anyway.

The 'tash looks better now, like he grew it rather than clipped it on.
