Sitting Duck Sculpt

G'day all,
well, for my first ever sculpt (and keeping in the spirit of silly season) chose to do a sculpt inspired by "Sitting Duck" picture. Bit silly, easy to achieve, and having fun fiddling with sculpey

Gary JD has some threads on sculpting 101, which I am using as a manual, of sorts.

First effort, I am pleased with the beak and general proportions, just didn't seem right. Plus I neglected to twist the wire work, so the putty was always sliding around.

So redid the armature, bulked out the body with aluminium foil, and started with a squatter body, longer neck.

Having fun, and learning as I go.

I love Michael Bedard's paintings. I have had this one for years and it makes me laugh every time I look at it.

I would relook at the duck's body. It is more triangular as opposed to the rectangular form you have. Also, you need to elongate the neck further. That is part of the humor. Good start nevertheless and I highly approve of the subject matter.

Hi Jamie,

Trust you to do something completely "off the wall" mate. I love it.

My only suggestion is to look at the length of the neck. It seems a bit short to me compared to the picture.

Keep going mate. Remember practice, not perfection.

What a great and funny thread! I really like the duck! As Tony have already written, the neck should be a bit thiner and longer, but it looks great!

Will revisit the neck over the next week.

Chose this so I have a high probability of success, rather then make my head explode by trying, oh, lets say a Marshall of Armies, Napoleonic era, with braid, sword etc in 40mm scale........

Still, this is kinda fun, sculpting bug has bitten!!

All modellers are slightly nuts

...Patrick, it may well be that you are a bit less nuts then me!!

Besides, Belgium has rich history, has produced many fine artisans within the modelling field (particularly Figures), and is a "more mature" society.

Australia (well, parts of it) is populated by the descendants of bush rangers and convicts, and the occasional free settler....

We even prefer our beer cold; definitely not civilized...(but makes a great deal of sense given the summers here)

Duck now has a head!!!

OK, back to pushing putty for a while....

Added the head, neck and wings, as well as the webbed feet.

I have him holding a styrene tube, so I can get the grasp right.

Looking ok now, and I have included the first two efforts at sculpting; interesting to see evolution in progress.

In the original print, he's drinking out of a glass. For my sanity's sake, and to get the sculpt finished, he is going to be drinking out of a can of cola, or something similar......

Kicking some ideas around with Tony Dawe, might also do a "Holy Duck" (Duck with Halo), a "Tough Duck", Rambo-esque, and may even do a "Count Duckula" idea....oh, this is going to be fun!!!

Great to see you back working on this very cool project, and wonderful to see how quickly you've progressed from your first effort. Shouldn't he be holding a can of Quack Cola.

A few more ideas for you to consider;

"Duck Trucker" - the checked flannel shirt, baseball cap and beer belly;
"Mother Ducker" - a Mafia-style wiseguy with a scar down his cheek;
"Duck Rogers" - my favourite Daffy Duck episode
"Digger Duck" - with slouch hat on head and ciggie in his beak
"Duck Diggler" - A grossly over-endowed character from "Boogie Nights", and of course
"Disco Duck" - no explanation needed to anyone over 30 years old.

Wow this is very impressive.

I love those Duck pictures.

As I come from the aicrafts, what's about Duck Yeager or a Top Gun Duck also a Red Baron Duck would be nice

Anyway,
duck after baking in oven. Pretty raw, needs some more work for the next step!
Smoothing some of the joins, fixing where the putty is rough/ thin, and the wires show through, may need to remove and pin the beak too.

Baron von DuckHofften, Top Duck, Duck Yeager about to clamber aboard Glamorous Duckis...clunky, could work....

I dont think I will ever sculpt.. too frustrating for a guy like me, i'll stick to the resin. But as for you Janus, finish this duck and bring it to life!!
