Completed The Sacking of Panama

Changing tack a little, while I'm waiting to some staining to Pirate no.3's shirt to dry, which will hopefully give the appearance of sweat and dirt,
I thought I get on with the treasure chest.
The chest was primed in white, and then I gradually built up washes of Scale 75 Walnut.
Once I was satisfied that I'd built up enough colour a wash of Raw Umber oils was painted over the chest to go into all the recesses.
I must point out, that yet again as you start work on different pieces that you really appreciate the detail.
The wood grain is absolutely superb, as well as the ageing and damage to the wood.
When the oils had dried out I made up a lighter shade of the basecoat, and lightly dry brushed this over the grain of the wood to bring out the detail.
This was followed by another wash of oils and left to dry.
All the metal work was given a basecoat of Black before going over with DarkStar old Silver with the addition of black and some drown.
I'm leaving this to dry for a couple of hours, then I'll be toning down the metal work to age it, and maybe add a little light rust here and there.

Malc, yes I like that, as you say the detail is great and you have brought it all out with the paints. Now all it needs is loads of little legs a set of Sharpe teeth "a la Terry Pratchet's luggage".

Lol I like that idea Simon, the big 120mm scale chest would do that a treat. The one Malc has is 75mm, the chest on its own is a joy to look at and would do lots of projects, never thought of that lol.

Malc your doing a fantastic job on the piece it looks great love it.

That's a good idea, and would certainly change the concept of the scene, or perhaps for another project. Funnily enough one I had an idea for while back, but not involving pirates.

Glad you like the chest.
The oil washes over the metal have dried nicely and I'm pleased with the effect.
All being well I'll post an update tomorrow, along with more on pirate no.3.

I've been working on different sections this morning, so not too much to show on the pirate.
The headscarf needs more work, and I think I've accidentally caught my finger on part of it and removed the paint.
Apart from adding detail to the leatherwork, where there's still more work required, I've added some sweat stains to the shirt.

Not a lot of progress to show as I've been working on some parts the require painting before attaching to the figure.
On the figure itself, I added some pattern to the bandana as it lacked contrast from the flesh tones.
I've weathered and detailed the leatherwork, although I think I need to tone it down a little on the back.
The sash has been blocked out with its base colour.

I'm currently working on the sash, musket and scabbard.
Its Grandad duty time again today, but I thought I'd give you a sneak preview of how it looks so far.

I quite like the close grouping, it works well in my opinion.

Absolutely, it is a really good "non combat" composition. I really like it as it is but it could tell more of a story if there was a 4th guy pointing out towards the viewer to explain why these 3 are all looking in the same direction not at each other.

You are doing a great job on this, enough colour to be interesting without falling into fantasy.

Great work Malc we love it just shown it to the team they all agree it’s beautiful work. Now looking forward to the end result.

Rob we decided on three figures as we thought 4 may be a little crowded and did not work in the scene too well. As to looking in one direction, we let the viewer decide what they are looking at.

The beauty of this collection is you can buy them as individuals to add to other pirates that are on the market or add other pirates to these to make an even bigger scene if you so wished. You do get other extra parts with the kits like a small chest with helmet, bottle of rum and a lantern. All can be added to the scene or left off.

Keep up the great work Malc it’s going very well indeed.
