He's coming together well, and one thing I can see is how your sculpting skills are increasing.

Nigel, Malc & Steve, thank you very much gentlemen, give me another 58 years and I might make a half decent sculptor. I have thought about trying something on a larger scale, there are commercially available bits I will need, I'll give it some thought for next year.

Cheers Simon

Hi Simon give it a go, we have some odds and ends knocking around in 75mm pm me your address an I will sort some out for you if your interested.

Cheers Steve, wasn't thinking that big but hey why not, it was Gary Higgins who advised me to try larger scales, that was years pre pandemic though. I'll pop a PM off.

Hi Mr Simon

All credit to you with the putty work ,the pipe looks oh so fiddly but you’ve got a great shaping ......reckon I would have took the easy option ...given him a cigar !

Great offer from TFB there so will be interesting to see what happens ......Have fun

Looking forward to seeing more

Happy benchtime

Cigar why the he'll didn't I think of that, oh well. Yes great offer from Steve quite looking forward to having a go to be honest, it will be a bit of a stretch for me but then again if it was easy it wouldn't be as much fun.

Cheers Simon

Will be interesting to see what you come up with.

Where have I been? I have completely missed this thread, sorry about that, Simon! This is a project near and dear to my heart! A Wachtmeister of Kürassiers from the Kaiser's Army, and in 1/32 scale, too. I will follow this going forward, you can be sure.

Also, I'm studying how you did the Mütze. I have a similar project planned, and that's to take the old Sanderson figure of a British sergeant and his wife, and convert him to a German for my Kaiser's Army collection. I'll give him the peaked cap. I have a couple of the kits, so I may convert another one to wear a Pickelhaube, too.

Prost!

Well played overcoming the mishaps, Simon!

As far as pipes go, I like to use a piece of fine wire for the stem, and then use putty for the bowl. It works for me for various styles of pipes, from the old clay pipes from the 18th century, to the German "grandfather pipes", to the simple pipes today. I'll use Mr Surfacer to thicken the stem as necessary.

Prost!

Brad, hi, yes the műtze is a slow process but converting a British staff pattern peaked cap should be fairly straight forward, though you will probably have to completely remake the peak.

The pipe is based on a dress makers pin and yes Magicsculpt, this is the second time I have attempted on of these. First time round when almost complete I dropped it and just could not find it so I settled for a cigar!

Interesting regarding the piping on the műtze, my reference from DSV Fosten who is pretty reliable shows piping round the crown and at the lower edge of the band. I was looking at putting him around 1900, would the piping be in use then or not?

As far as the moustache is concerned I was hoping not to do one as I want to paint a clean face for a change, yeah I know totally the wrong period for that. You are right of course about him having impressive whiskers, so I guess I will. Can always do another figure with out facial hair, though they are due to be Spanish and Italian so that won't do either!

Cheers Simon

Ah, yes, piping, they had, indeed. Sorry, that's my mistake I thought that was a cord of braid.

Prost!
Brad

It's meant to be piping but is probably a bit thick, I may have to redo it all with stretched sprue.

And while I am here another small update on the pipe, remember just how small this is.

Not too far from being ready to prime with the rattle can.

Cheers Simon

Loving this Simon, it's very much my way of doing things and with subjects or poses that are off the beaten track.
I'm interested too to see what you make of Steve's kind offer
Keep em coming
Neil

Many thanks Neil, I do like the unusual figures and prefer relaxed, or at least non action poses. If nothing else the non action pose represents 95% of a soldiers life, the other 5 being the nitty gritty parts of the job. Again thanks for your comments, makes me feel thar I'm doing something right we shall see if I can manage a leap up in size in the new year thanks to Steve and the lads at TFB.

Cheers Simon
