Very nice progress all round. The blues on your French figures are looking really good, a nice dark tone. Subtle blends so far as well, nice work.

I was going to say 1914 Belgian guides but that lacing threw me. I didn't twig it could be an officer!

He isn't an officer. The lace is yellow and as far as I know is the full dress, the other tunic

The fella third from left is wearing what I assume is undress or Campaign uniform. I haven't been able to dig anything more than generic info up but there are further illustrations of Lancers wearing the same style but in blue with white lacing.

As this image has an officer and other ranks in the same laced dolman I am assuming similar is true of the guides.

Cheers Simon

Just a thought, in case anyone isn't aware of the site, uniformology.com is a great site for British uniform detail and to a lesser extent many other nations including Belgium.

This? Belgian Guides Officer?

WELL DONE THAT MAN ?.....LOL

Hi Simon

Now your fully up to speed after your YouTube university course coming on well on both

Did a google ( or rather Mrs Nap did ) .......a wash is generally diluted with water and a glaze diluted with both water and a medium or both or a very transparent colour could be applied
www.wetcanvas.com

A glaze is a opaque colour that's stays where it's put, a wash is a technique that pushes colour all over www.spikeybits.com

A Belgium .....something similar in a OSPREY ...knew one would feature somewhere ...lol .....very colourful......enjoy the lacework

Look forward to more

Have fun at the bench

Cheers Kev, I try not to go as far as WWI though this fella is apparently from 1910. Though like the French the Belgians went into the war in more or less full dress. I'd quite like to do the Lancers and chasseur a cheval who wore similar uniforms as well, more to add to the list.

Been busy today around the house earning good behaviour points as I'm out to the Letchworth show tomorrow. So not really got a great deal done, though now I've learnt to glaze properly the painting rate has slowed down. Hopefully it looks better, oh and I now need a proper wet palette, my Philadelphia cream cheese version is way too small.

That's looking good, I can see nice smooth transitions on the blue and crimson.

I hear you. Part of my problem with painting my second French figure was that I had filled up my wet palette with various glaze mixtures and trying to reactivate and reuse them the next day on the second figure didn't work. And I have quite a big wet palette!

Slow work collecting the Philli, not really a cheese fan so I wait till the boss wants some. Yes the Guide will get to BC, are you able to make Yeovil?

Thanks, the colours are quite dark on the blue so still a fair bit to do, the crimson I'm not sure if I can do too much more without losing the colour. Would keeping the wet palette in the fridge make it last longer?

Cheers Simon

Hi Mr Simon

Yes I will be at Yeovil with SWMBO and Jimbo ......I am the good looking one .....honest

The 6th Dragoon won't be there ...housework getting in way

If your going mines a white coffee no sugar , Jimbo has white coffee ....sugar on side ....just saying ....lol

WP in Fridge ...some do it ....apparently keeps colors fresh .....don't put it in the top

Many thanks, I want to keep the blue coats dark and same with the crimson.

A frustrating session this morning, I have started the lace across the chest of the Belgian Guide, I decided to use a mix of Duro and Magicsculpt. This proved to be too stiff to roll as thinly as I'd like it to be. So off came the whole left side of lacing on the dolman. A second attempt was more successful using just Magicsculpt which when fresh is soft and squishable but does roll out satisfyingly thin. I will only done side as I'm prone to put a finger in the middle of it trying to do the other side. The strands are all held in place with watered down PVA and teased into position with a fine brush. The other side will wait till this is cured fully, then another wait to add the trefoil ends and buttons.

Crimson is one of my favorite colors, very tricky to paint.
To me Crimson is a deep red shy of being pinkish .
What worked best for me is the use of Vallejo Red, and a dab of Formula P3 Murderous Magenta.
Shades are done by addimg a little bit of Dark blue, lights are done by adding French Orange to the base color.
Cheers!
