This morning I've painted the front lower section of the surcoat, and added basic highlights.
Further shadows and top highlights will be added later as I progress.
I've also started work on the shield, wanting to work on the metal edging before any paint is added.
The edging was first burnished, before masking off the interior both sides.
Black graphite paste. ( Black grate polish) was applied with a cotton bud and left to dry for about ten minutes, before buffing it up.

From the photo you can see the realistic effect the graphite paste has produced.
A bit messy to use, but worth it for the results.

Coming on a treat Malc, sorry to hear it is a bit of a challenge for you at the moment, hopefully everything will come out OK for you. Hasn't affected your artwork though.
Melanie

Hope things get better for you soon Malc, a quiet life is what we all strive for but plans rarely run smoothly.

Love what you've done with this, I haven't seen the graphite paste used in many years.

Keep the faith mate things can only get better.

Cheers Simon

Malc,
Whatever it is, I know you will get where you want to. I agree with Melanie....it's not affecting your techniques. That is looking so good [I expect nothing else from you], keep up the good work. Hopefully, might see you at the Gravesham MMS Show this coming Saturday? Or are you on grandfather duties?
Talking of techniques.....maybe I'll get to see Melanie's Napoleonic Dutch Lancer 'for the real'. Should be a good Show. It's how I came to meet you Malc, and look where you have got me to!!
Cheers to each, including Briggsy, and I hope to get another figure onto the vBench in the next couple of days.

Thanks Melanie, I have to admit I was surprised how well this mornings session went, I was expecting the opposite.

Cheers Simon. Fingers crossed, we're hoping for some good news soon.
I've not used graphite paste in ages, it still has its uses.

Hi Kim.
Yes, I'll be at the Gravesham show on Saturday, look forward to seeing you there.

Nice updates Malc, I really like the way you have handled the surcoat. Burnishing the metal, grate polish, that's old school! Looks very good though.

Hope things are ok for you away from the bench.

Yes, Graphite paste is very old school, just like me.

It's surprising how much there is to do on this piece.
As I progress, I having to work on other areas to help with the assembly later.
Looking at the box art, they'd opted for a dark black/brown for the leather, after some thought
I was thinking a tan leather would look good and add some contrast to the black surcoat,
before going ahead I checked out my Osprey book on Hospitaller's and was pleased to see, their colour plates also show tanned leather.
At this stage I've blocked out the leather work with Scale 75 Orange leather, and will use oils to detail them later.
The main course of work the morning was to work on the inside of the shield. for this I used the Scale 75 wood and leather set.
A glaze of Van Dyck brown oils was applied afterwards.

Really nice work on theinside of the shield, you really have the knack of creating convincing wood. Like your thinking on the tan leather as well, will add interest and contrast.

Cheers Simon

Thanks Simon, I've always enjoyed painting wood grain, and had fun painting it this morning. adding the glaze of oils gave it a bit more life.
