Hello mate, sorry won't be able to make Crewe as I'll be nursing one of the dogs who needs an operation and will be convalescing during that time. Sorry mate.
.

Sorry mae that's a shame, try and keep space in your diary for Valiant's show in March see the thread he started a while back.

Thanks for your kind words.

Paul.

There is now a world shortage of plastic. On the FT index the price of plastic rose to its highest level in 20 years.

.

S'all my fault for hoarding, Bob.

Here's one of THREE spares boxes of plastic bits n bobs

Great to see your work in progress Paul. I can't believe you've nearly got all the main elements together already - that's a work ethic! I was going to ask if you were doing all the panicked figures collapsing in front of the grenadiers but can see you are. This part of the scene always confused me as until I studied it a bit and thought what was going on it looked like the grenadiers are fighting them , but I now assume they are just holding them back to give the big man some space. Also I assume everyone is retreating towards the back of the painting away from the battle so I wondered would that house in Genappe really have cause to be on fire? What do you reckon?
Hope to see a few pics of that carriage soon!
Cheers
Mat

I think the painting in this form is quite possibly an allegoric. Painted in 1879, at the time of fighting in Afghanistam and the Zulu wars at the peak of the high Victorian period.
My feeling is that it is a depiction of a stonewall of discipline standing firm amongst a flood tide of panic.
The phrase "He met his Waterloo" is a good metaphore then and now for the end of any Empire, and I have always had this first and foremost in my mind for the story being told.
That said he produced fine Artworks consistantly, and although I can find dozens of errors in the painting regarding uniform; perhaps the story was more important as a moral, than the accuracy that only we would look for say in a new figure sculpt, I am not sure.
With regard to the house at Genappe, who knows... poetic licensen a stray shrapnell airbust that overshot? Someone destroying stores on the retreat?.
Or simply, a bit of something going on to complete the composition.
The reason I suggest that is that the layout on two diagonals is a well known artistic device and camera trick to lead your viewing around the action. If you look first at the left side you are drawn into and then round to the right and back to centre.
If you start on the other side it compells you in the opposite track.
All of this frames the Emperor and to my mind he is actually of secondary importance to the piece.
So, in short, I think he made it up.

WOWWW your a Modelling Machine Paul . All I have is managed to do this year is a 1/35 Willy Jeep almost finished and two Master Box mounted figures made up but no paint yet .

Better late than never.....me I mean. I am still around but not getting any modelling or internetting done as I work on the house.

Great pic to replicate and super progress so far. I predict we will actually see this one done and in record time. the Force is with you.

Just waded my way through all the comments on this post. It's quite a read.
The volume of plastic you've shown and the physical area being covered is truly mind-blowing.
This is going to be one helluv a project to follow.

Cheers,
Andrew

Hi Andrew.
It does seem to have caught the imagination of many.
Because I've lived with the idea for so long,
I don't have the trepidation others are voicing.
I hope it lives up to expectations,
but I guess as long as I'm happy with it,
that should be enough.
thanks very much for looking

Paul.

Yes, you have captured the imagination of all modellers and created much needed excitement for PF.

They say there are 3 times a man can howl at the moon......
The 1st time he falls in love,
When his firstborn arrives,
and when he finishes a job that seemed impossible to begin with......
Hope to hear you howling some time this year

Bob

Wow Bob. That is humbling and a lovely sentiment, thank you.

You know this project would get done much quicker if people would stop posting on this thread and let Paul get on with it, lock it mods. ;):playful: Good luck Paul, I thought I was being a bit ambitious with 23 flats. :D

It's actually ok Roger, most of the posts come in when I am at work in the office and it gets me through the tedium.
Many like me as you know, spend all day inventing office pranks and jolly japes.
There's only so many ways to sabotage a stapler or someone's phone.
The ' Highlight' of today was when a colleague with a stomach ache, (who's been going on and on about it for two hours), came into my room with a cup of water from the water cooler outside.
She said "ohhh I do need something a bit 'heavier' than a cup of water really"
Full of sympathy I replied "pour it in a mug then"......
Ohhh thsere's no end of fun in clerical work eh !

Good luck with your set of 25.

Paul.
