I think a common timeline applies to many of us...
The boxes of plastic armymen that I played with and the Britain's and various lead soldiers my Grandmaother gave me, fostered an interest in military history. Then a progression to plastic model kits, especially once I found the Airfix Napoleonics and a budding figure painter was born. I painted uncountable 28mm and my share of GW figs and in the last couple of years I came upon this wealth of 54 and 75mm figs.

I guess what I'm getting at, "toy soldiers" are probably the root of most of the figure painters here and there is no reason the two branches of the same hobby can't co-exist in the same space.

Or I'm blowing hot air outta my ass

People should be able to do whatever they like in the hobby without others looking down on them for what they do.
I remember playing with toy soldier's as a kid and making models(poorly)
When I needed to occupy my mind in the 90's I went back to modelling tank's aircraft etc. Phil in the model shop told me about a club in Bebbington. I went to this club for the first time and took a couple of models with me. I thought I'd get help and advice but what I got was blatant slagging off,
This almost turned me away from modelling for good until a nice chap named Ron McKenzie pulled me aside and told me to ignore them.he said they were always like this and proceeded to show me a figure that he had painted and explained to me all about it.
I was amazed at this figure, and Ron said that he would help me if I wanted to paint figures,My simple answer was yes.he said that two other blokes at the club would help me these being Alan Ball(sculptor) and Ged Kinkaid, the figures they painted were superb and thus this was when I became a figure painter and they helped me so much in the early years.
These days I model almost anything and I'm glad I do.
And to those who can't appreciate what others do within the hobby, this is all I have to say to them "Go fuck youself"
Also I'm glad I found this superb figure modelling site/club couldn't really find a better bunch of guys/gals
Cheers
Ralph
