Just realised there's another ref inGanascia's (Pg32) inventory.

Captions says it's a: Portrait de l’officier Perroud du bataillon de Neuchâtel

Note his rather dated look |(ie almost Ancient Regime yet the Batallion wasn't formed until 1808*) and reversed colours, but the facing is still clearly a chamois type yellow:

Neu.JPG Neuchatel OR 1st Regt? Neu 1st..JPG

ADDENDUM: or did he first join the 1st Regt who did wear red with a 'yellow' facing (formed 1805): if so that may account for the older look and reversed colours (but compare with the more vivid yellow of the 1st habit in Chateux de Morges alongside.

As someone said: uniform colours are a nightmare (and minefield) o_O

*Assuming Ganascia's caption is correct, according to Alain Piggeard, Perroud was a Lieutenant and was killed in the campaigns of 1813.

Yet another interesting post, Thanks Neil, I think I might stick to modern stuff next time where there is colour films, etc. ...........no only kidding, but what a minefield, still it creates interest.

Thanks Guys
Geoff

Ha Ha, you forgot the wishie washie Ilford or the red hued Agfa.

I used to shoot Ilford B&W (HP5) and Agfa Transparency film... nothing wrong with them, but I can't vouch for Boots own brand (or the free films provided by those mail order 'pea soup' processing houses... rubbish in/rubbish out).

HP5 was super, I used that when I was doing motor racing, but their slide film I didn't like, but I did find the Agfa slide film a bit red but in the 60's my camera was quite basic, Halina 35X so none of the tech stuff they have now. The Kodak range I found suited me best in all my various cameras.

...my camera was quite basic, Halina 35X

Yes, I started with a Boots 'Beretta' viewfinder jobbie (plus extra lenses to fit on the front so I could photo my many a/c models). Then graduated to a Praktica SLR (fantastic VfM,... with a Carl Zeiss lens!), then a Yashika (complete with needle balancing light monitoring), finally a fully auto Rolleiflex (Singapore sub-brand of Rollei... but nowhere near the quality). In those days did my own B&W Dev&Print plus Agfa/Fuji trannies (oh, errr).Still have the Beretta now (plus a 1913 patent 127 Kodak 'Autograph' bellows fold up... I've taken photos with it and, you never know, it may have seen WW1 service).

Your Halina is here: http://licm.org.uk/livingImage/Halina_35X-Super.html
And my Beretta here: http://licm.org.uk/livingImage/Beirette_JNR.html (clearly Boots had it re-branded)
The Kodak is this but covered in leather(ette?): http://licm.org.uk/livingImage/Kodak_VPK-1920.html

I now shoot a Lumix digital 'bridge' camera... so I can take 1000s of photos without thinking* about any of them (n)

*well, not totally true, but it is too easy to just look and shoot... you don't have the limitation of 36 frames and Dev&Print costs
