Use Tamiya masking tape for puttees. I saw Per Olav Lund do this in his WWI dioramas and it looks more realistic than sculpting IMO (which usually looks too exaggerated).

Well I'm not much use for anything else at the mo, got another update to post. I couldn't sleep for the pain last night so started modelling at 0220 for a few hours.

That's interesting-I would have thought it a little easier, because you could make a very thin strip of putty and wind it like a....puttee

Cheers Brad, I know it's not PC these days to like the colonial.past, but screw that it's history, if people don't like all they have to do is learn from.it. There is also something appealing about Frances African colonies.
I have tried quite a few methods of making putties and trying to apply an actual ribbon of putty or this foil is not a good way to go, well.not for my thick fingers. The ribbon has to be very fine to be in scale, keeping this in one piece as it passes around the leg several times is beyond my skill and temperament!
Best way I have done it before now is just keep adding putty a dab at a time and work around the leg from the ankle up. This needs constant adjustment and needs putty to be removed from lower folds to ensure the higher ones don't become out of scale thick. Often best done in 2 or more separate sessions, slow and laborious, so finding just a single reference showing gaiters rather than putties was good enough for me!
I.need to do.some photography of this mornings work, but I am totally wiped out from.lack.of sleep and pain and to.top it off I am the responsible adult when my Granddaughter comes for the day. Ha responsible me, my kids really don't know me that well!
So updates imminent(ish).

Oda, Terry, thank you gentlemen I aim to please. Actually said it before, but it needs reiterating, I was in a real slump before joining PF, but explaining and showing my work has forced me to put the right effort in. That said no work today, my Granddaughter has been wearing her Elsa dress all day and being a real Diva, I knackered.

Taken longer than I would have liked to get to but here is my latest progress report. His waist sash/cummerbund is done as is the lower portion of his tunic. As he will be wearing webbing etc I'm trying to workout the best way to illustrate the weights effects on his clothing. Also done his head gear less the jaunty tassle. The little thing sticking out from his left leg is fine fishing line that I am trying to start using for braiding.
Hopefully I'll get some decent bench time tomorrow!
