Simon, What a difference! The ears look fine. You could go in with some fine sandpaper or a file and take some off of the ears around the outside. A little bit will make a big difference, and the addition of hair will "hide" them. Now look at the center photo, the eye on the right (when looking at the photo)or the head's left seems to be angled slightly and the "eyeball" itself larger than the other. This might be easily fixed by adding a bit more to the bottom eyelid. Just a thought.~Gary

Gary,

No, I'm not happy with the eyes either! I've been trying to "tweak" them today (starting with the left one - which is why it's different to the right!) looking at the picture when I scanned it, I decide to add some more putty and carve back (your picture will help a lot again!, thanks! - I will buy some reference material soon!)
It's not apparent from the pictures, but the top lids don't actually blend in with the rest of the eye socket! So he's looking a bit cretinous at the moment!
All part of the learning curve though (I think I need to stop thinking like a figure painter and try to think like a sculptor if you see what I mean?)

(y) Lookin better Simon (y)

You have made vast improvements over the photos from the other day, The ears are much much better, and like you say, the hair will cover them as well. I have enjoyed watching your progress and keep up the great work.

Guy

Thanks Guy

I should be getting a digital camera soon, so I'll be able to post some progress shots with the head in context (assuming I get a bit more work done on the armature! - just been building it up with the left over putty so far!)
Hoping to do some work on the sword tonight as well, so that should be the next thing you'll get to see (easy to scan!) if anybody'd be interested that is!

I'm enjoying this project a lot (but I'm not getting much painting done! :( )

Simon

Hello Simon,

I am looking forward to your steps of progression with this project. As far as being interested, I think I can speak for many of us here that all the points you cover are interesting and please post them as they come along to you.

Hi Simon

We are interested! From the original thread with your sketch, to this one and the evolution of Derek's noggin, this is proving to be very interesting indeed!

Do keep it up; that's the value of a DG like this, from experienced builders of commercial masters, to first timers like yourself, there is an excellent knowledge base here! Sitting in the confines of your home, with the expert opinions of small boys, it's very good to get second and third opinions from beyond...

Hope to get to see Mr Smalls the Slayer in the flesh soon!

   True!

Hope to get to see Mr Smalls the Slayer in the flesh soon!

I'll try & make it to a club meeting this side of Xmas. (I'm thinking David St.Hubbins would make a good "Ranger" figure for a future project )

Cheers
Simon
