That’s a brilliant idea Kev and imo it does not look too prominent. My only concern and thought is what it’s been stuck on with…..over time with air/atmospheric moisture that they may peel?

Good point Dave appreciate your input and comments

simple way to avoid this is to cover the whole thing AFTER painting with a layer of painting on clear coat - you can mix say flat and gloss to obtain something in between where needed.

Thanks LH for advice

Sorry mate, I thought you were masking off the white bits, are you going to paint over the tape? I've always painted a solid red band for the middle set of dice then did the verticals alternating red white and filled in where they meet with Blue/Black or green. Does that make sense? All the best.
Scotty

Cheers Scotty , of course it makes sense , my idea is to paint over the tape ......was the area where they cross ...dark blue or green....dark green as behind badge or dark blue as a Royal Regt .....

Piping around crown ....red or gold ........any thoughts ?

This will be next on the bench finishing off the flesh on Kozehedub

Thanks to all for looking in

The joys of researching British Army historical uniforms where every reference contradicts the one before.

For the Guards the coloured squares should be blue as for the crown piping all I can suggest is that subaltern ranks including captains would be red and field officers, majors and above would be gold. That said before seeing the above picture I thought they would be red for all officers.

Good luck.

Cheers Simon

Yes mate, dark blue for a Royal Regiment. I always thought the piping was red, do you think it changed on rank? I'm not near my books but I could have a look through them tomorrow if that helps?
Scotty.

Like you I always thought it was red, but then presented with one that has metal wire piping it was the only plausible explanation I could come up with. That said dress regs were just another amusing novel where many regiments were concerned and it could have just been down to one CO to change things to his own tastes while he was in command. The British Army will always throw oddities like this into the mix with no explanation, personally I'd go with the red but it's artists choice I think on this.

I think the top one is Guards, I'd go with the red. On Uniformology it's red for the Royal Scots.
Scotty.

Thank you

This was sent by Mick Ankim

From Uniformology ... THE 1880 FORAGE CAP FOR INFANTRY

The cap was 3 inches high, of blue cloth for infantry and dark green for light infantry.

The drooping patent leather peak was edged with a 1/2 inch full gold embroidery. There was a patent leather chinstrap attached inside the headband.

Regiments styled ''Royal'' had a band of 1 1/2 inch scarlet cloth while non-Royal regiments and all light infantry regiments had a 1 3/4 inch black band of oak leaf lace.

Scottish regiments had bands of red and white diced lace with blue squares for royal regiments and green for non-royal.

On the crown of the cap was a netted purl button and braided figure in black lace.

On the edge of the crown was a gold Russia braided welt for Field Officers and blue cloth welt for others.

Scots (royal) regiments had a scarlet welt.

In 1897, all light infantry regiments were ordered to replace the round forage cap with their dark green folding field caps and all Scottish regiments to replace them with the glengarry.

It was finally abolished completely in 1902.

So it’s going to be Red piping and dark blue centre squares on dicing

Appreciate all help

did you use pva as glue for the paper? either that or a combination of PVA with dabs of cyanoacrylate to keep the paper in place until the PVA is completely set. The PVA will 'stiffen' the paper and keep it in place. Varnish will then seal everything in.

info provided for future reference

Hi Daniel

I’m doing the Royal Scots version with central green backing on badge centre ...going to make it as noticeable as possible ...but it’s so small !

Also interesting there’s a distinct red edging all the way round the dicing in the picture but can’t see any on the originals

Thanks for looking in

The chequering is looking good, like you not sure about the red edging possibly an artifact of the computer generated image.

The unknown artist is my good self, I know what you're going to ask and no I don't remember the paints I used on the lace. Hopefully I documented them in the WIP.

Cheers Simon
